The Festival of Youth Culture Kunigunda is one of the biggest projects of Youth Centre Velenje, organised in cooperation with young locals.
Kunigunda was a non-conformist who once lived in Velenje Castle. Because she transcended the spirit of her time and didn't submit to authority, she was thrown into the castle well. She still whispers through the castle chambers today, but since 1998, she has been spreading her ideas loudly and vividly across the town at the end of August. Do you ever run into her?
The Kunigunda Festival is a local platform for presenting unconventional and more or less independent cultural and artistic practices that, under a free spirit, unravel ties, break down masks, and clear minds. It creates opportunities for young, unestablished artists and serves local audiences with pioneers of alternative genres. It brings together legends and rising stars.
Not behind the heavy doors of galleries, not even on the polished parquet floor. But under a tree, on a bridge, underground, on a roof, in the shack, in the middle of nowhere and everywhere.
The main concert venue is the terrace in front of the Youth Cultural Club eMCe plac. Kunigunda brings music, exhibitions and installations, performances and other productions, talks, and workshops to unexpected urban and suburban corners.

Kunigunda's book The Unfettered Heart is a collection of heartfelt images, programme highlights and interesting glimpses. We wanted to record a twenty-year cardiogram of the Festival of Youth Culture Kunigunda in one place. It highlights the local cultural and artistic guests of the festival and the widely acclaimed or merely recognisable Slovenian and foreign artists who have presented themselves at the festival. It includes lists of events that were included in the programme in individual years accompanied by memories, photographs, comments and interesting information from personal archives, festival publications and the media. which for many either looked into or touched their hearts, softened, warmed, lightened, knocked on, breathed upon, or placed something on it, opened it, grew close to it, perhaps unintentionally broke it and hopefully healed and soothed it.
